In short: you can reach Otaru from Sapporo Station on JR Hokkaido’s Airport Train, which runs through to Otaru. The Otaru Tourist Association’s access page lists the fastest trip from Sapporo as 32 minutes (the association’s figure for the fastest case, on the Rapid Airport). JR Hokkaido’s English page says not every train at Sapporo Station goes to Otaru, so check the destination before boarding, and that trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi do not go to Otaru. Non-reserved seats are in cars 1-3 and 5-6, the reserved seat is car 4, and IC cards such as Suica work for the trip. The winter tips and the sample half-day outline in this post are my suggestion. Times and rules change, so check the official pages for current details (checked on October 9, 2026).
Otaru is a port town, and this post is about how to put the trip together, with the rail facts taken from official pages and clearly separated from my own ideas.
Please read this first: this post is general information written by a private resident of Sapporo. It is not affiliated with JR Hokkaido, any tour operator, shop, or facility, and it is not an official source. I do not write about personal experiences here. Quotes and facts below come from the pages listed at the end; translations of Japanese pages are mine. Anything marked “my suggestion” is not from an official page. Please check the official pages for current details.
The route at a glance
| Item | What the official pages say | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Train | The Airport Train runs directly between New Chitose Airport, Sapporo, and Otaru | JR Hokkaido (English) |
| Fastest time, Sapporo to Otaru | 32 minutes | Otaru Tourist Association |
| Check before boarding | Not all trains at Sapporo Station go to Otaru; Teine- or Hoshimi-bound trains do not | JR Hokkaido (English) |
| Seats | Non-reserved: cars 1-3 and 5-6. Reserved: car 4 only | JR Hokkaido (English) |
| Tickets | IC cards such as Suica, ICOCA, PASMO, and Kitaca can be used; tickets are also sold at stations | JR Hokkaido (English) |
| Beyond Otaru | Passengers going toward Yoichi, Kutchan, or Niseko must transfer at Otaru Station; IC cards cannot be used beyond Otaru, so buy a ticket in advance | JR Hokkaido (English) |
JR Hokkaido’s English page says the fastest Airport Train takes 73 minutes from New Chitose Airport to Otaru. That is the airport-to-Otaru figure, not Sapporo-to-Otaru. For the Sapporo-to-Otaru time, this post uses the Otaru Tourist Association’s access page, which is in Japanese and says the fastest trip from Sapporo is 32 minutes (my translation). The JR Hokkaido page I read does not give a Sapporo-to-Otaru time, so for the train you actually want, use the timetable search linked on the JR Hokkaido page.
How do I get on the right train to Otaru?
Check the destination board at Sapporo Station: trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi do not go to Otaru. According to the JR Hokkaido page, non-reserved seats are in cars 1-3 and 5-6 (car 4 is reserved only), and IC cards such as Suica work for the trip to Otaru but not beyond it. For more on seats, luggage, and tickets on the same JR Hokkaido Airport Train, see New Chitose Airport to Sapporo, Explained: Trains, Buses, and Which to Choose on Sapporo, Explained, a sister site written by the same Sapporo resident.
What is in Otaru, and what to look up
The Otaru Tourist Association’s page “Getting to know Otaru” (my translation of the Japanese title) describes Otaru as a port town that prospered with the railway and herring, and also describes it as a town of slopes. It also says that when you step out of Otaru Station, you can see the sea and, beyond it, the Mashike mountains.
For winter, the association’s winter events page (December to February) mentions the “Blue Canal” and the candle-lit “Otaru Snow Light Path,” and says the snowy streets are beautiful too. The page does not give dates in the part I read, so check the official pages for current dates.
I am not naming restaurants or shops here. For ideas on what to see, the Otaru Tourist Association’s site is the place to start.
Winter tips (my suggestion)
Except for the JR Hokkaido page I point to in the last item, none of this comes from an official page.
- Leave early and plan the return first. Look up the return train in the timetable search before you go, and give yourself extra time. Winter weather can delay trains.
- Wear shoes with a good grip. Streets in a town of slopes can be icy, so plan to walk slowly. For shoes, grips, and walking habits, see this guide to not slipping on ice in Sapporo on Sapporo Insider Guide, a sister site written by the same Sapporo resident.
- Dress in layers you can take off. Trains and shops are heated, and the outside air is not.
- Keep the day simple. Choose two or three places instead of a long list. A snowy walk takes longer than you think.
- Have a plan B for bad weather. If trains are disrupted, JR Hokkaido’s Airport Train page has a section called “When train services are disrupted” (I did not read its contents). Check it before you travel.
A sample half-day outline (my suggestion)
- Take an Airport Train from Sapporo Station to Otaru. Check the destination on the board before you get on.
- Spend the middle of the day on foot around the places you picked in advance from the Otaru Tourist Association’s site.
- Leave time for the walk back to Otaru Station, and take a train back to Sapporo well before it gets late.
On a day when the weather is too rough to leave Sapporo, see Sapporo on a Snowy Day: Odori, Susukino, and the Underground Walkways. For another day trip, see Jozankei Onsen Day Trip from Sapporo.
Before you go: a short checklist
- Look up the Airport Train timetable and your return train on JR Hokkaido’s timetable search.
- Check the destination board at Sapporo Station: trains bound for Teine or Hoshimi do not go to Otaru.
- Decide how you will pay: an IC card such as Suica, or a ticket from a machine or counter.
- If you are only going for the day, my suggestion is to leave large luggage at your hotel in Sapporo.
- Check the Otaru Tourist Association’s pages for events and for any winter dates.
